ISO Standards

Globally recognised. Setting the standard.

What are ISO standards?

When it comes to operating a business effectively, many organisations turn to the internationally recognised ISO standards. They aren’t a law or Government regulation, but rather a guide to best-practice. Internationally determined and set out by experts, ISO standards are used by businesses who want to do better, achieve more, and be recognised as being able to deliver products and services that meet quality, environmental and safety exceptions.

These standards cover all aspects of industry, from the best way to structure the management of a company to how to develop and manage your manufacturing standards. Becoming ISO certified in the standards relevant to your business gives consumers and other stakeholders confidence in your products and services. More than that, though, it serves as a set of guiding principles to ensure your organisation operates effectively.

Below are some of the management system standards where our ISO standards experts can help your organisation become certified for.

What is a Management System?

A management system is a “documented” process whereby the organisation defines and manages the interaction of processes within the organisation (including those products and services it might need externally), to achieve its required objectives.

The type of organisation and complexity of its processes will determine the level of level of complexity required by the management system. For example, a small family run business such as a coffee shop will require a high level of leadership and hands on training being provided by the business owner to each employee. This process will provide clear information to the individual employee on how they contribute to the organisation’s overall objectives, without the need for extensive documentation. For larger organisations this information will need to be more clearly defined as different departments and functional levels of the business will have different objectives. More complex businesses, may need extensive documentation and controls in order to fulfil each of their obligations and meet their organisational objectives.

In response to recommendations made in the 2018 Boland Review, Work Health and Safety laws, along with the Federal Senate Inquiry on Industrial Deaths introduced the Industrial manslaughter bill by all states and territories (with the exception of Tasmania). The Amendment Bill outlines that where there is gross deviation from the reasonable standard of care from a PCBU that endangers the lives of their workers, there will be severe penalties. The penalties that have been applied include 20-25 years imprisonment for an individual (CEO, Executives etc.), while corporations may face fines of between $10Mil and $20Mil.

ISO 45001 crosses geographic, political, economic, commercial and social boundaries, providing you as an organisation a single point of reference for managing your occupational health and safety management needs. ISO 27001 – Information Security Management System (ISMS)

This international standard deals with information security management systems. In 2013 ISO27001 was updated and has been gaining popularity ever since. This was particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic where working from home became the new norm. Organisations now needed to demonstrate that the systems they had in place are capable of warding off cyber-attacks and more importantly protecting client information from such attacks.

With cyber-security an ever-present threat, it is vital for all businesses to understand and implement systems to control sensitive and customer information. ISO 27001 enables organisations of any kind to manage the security of assets such as financial information, intellectual property, employee details or information entrusted by third parties. This certification drastically increases consumer confidence that your organisation is capable of and will keep their private information and data secure.

Integrated Management System (IMS)

The IMS brings together your QMS, EMS and OHSMS in one framework that features many common components. This is not only a more cost-effective way of implementing systems than doing them individually, but it also provides you greater market penetrations by being triple certified. Auditing is also made easier with less disruption to operations and alignment of the three standards.
